A book study: The Book of Mormon’s Witness to Its First Readers   By Dale E. Luffman, Community of Christ Seminary Press.

Third Sunday Space

I may not know much, but I do know we are an adventurous and resilient bunch here in AZ. When the risk of gathering posed too great for our safety, one by one we learned how to gather online.  Not all arrived at the same time and I am mindful that not all are with us now, but more and more are coming along.

Now that we sense we may be in this digital community realm a while longer, your pastors have collaborated with all the other leadership in the mission center to share in ministry.  On each third Sunday of the month, one of our eight congregations in the mission center will be featured for worship where all are invited to come.

On July 19, if you are planning to join a worship, consider joining Saguaro Heights as they host Blair White as guest minister.  Blair currently works with the Multi-Nation Team of Apostles as part of his role in Community of Christ’s International Services.  Prior to this, Blair served as a Pastor and Latter-day Seeker Minister in Utah and as Mission Center President in Mid-Atlantic USA, Chesapeake Bay USA, Bountiful USA, and East Asia Mission Centers.

Blair was our scheduled guest minister for Reunion this summer, so we are pleased he can share with us at roughly the same time.  In the coming weeks, look for details in the Newsletter, on the AZ MC Facebook page, or via your congregation’s announcement routes. Thank you, Saguaro Heights, for hosting next month’s Third Sunday Space.  You remain a blessing to us all.

Sara Tubbesing, AZMC President

Easter Services

As we continue to find new ways of being together when physical distancing guidelines prevent our gatherings, you’re invited to join us for “Living Hope,” an online Easter worship experience.

On Sunday, April 12 we will be hosting two online gatherings to share in Easter celebration and worship together.

Gathering 1 — 4 a.m. (CDT) Time zone calculator
Gathering 2 — 2 p.m. (CDT) Time zone calculator

By having two gatherings we hope to increase participation around the world and allow people to join in at a reasonable time of their day. Pick the time that best fits your day and worship with us through music, prayers, reflections from members around the world, and a homily by President Steve Veazey.

To provide opportunities for interaction from home, we’ll be broadcasting the worship on the church’s Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram feeds. Viewers will be invited to share in the comments on Facebook and Instagram or by using #CofChristEaster on Twitter at several points during the worship. The broadcast also will be available at www.CofChrist.org/live-webcast and the church’s YouTube channel.

From Denise Leichter – Pacific Southwest International Mission Center President
I thought as we continue to march through this pandemic as a human family; you might find space for our Santa Barbara Congregations neighbor, Rabbi Cohen, in the sharing of his sermon Friday night. The interfaith clergy association here is copying each other on prayers, sermons, the invitation to online worships, study groups, etc. We are taking care of each other, as we journey to take care of you, as a diverse and worthy human family.

Blessings for another week that has personal sunsets and new sunrises. Stay vigilant in social connections and physical distancing. The news and numbers will become staggering, but we must cling to HOPE, create moments of JOY, share LOVE, and participate in PEACE for all people that need each other.

Announcement: It is with sadness that we share with you that former Apostle Dale Luffman passed away on March 25th at his home from a battle with cancer. Dale lived in Oregon the last few years of his life, and services for Dale have not been announced yet. Please keep wife Judy and the rest of Dale’s family in your prayers.

Blanie Nelson requested to inform the Mission Center the following:

We have chosen to place Dave in palliative care under Hospice of the Valley at Brookdale North Mesa, an assisted living center.

He spent a week in the hospital early this month including a few days in ICU with sepsis (blood infection), followed by a couple weeks in rehab at a skilled nursing center.

Dad’s heart is sometimes not pacing properly, even though his pacemaker itself was checked out at the hospital and is performing well. We talked it over, and Dad does not want any more invasive treatment, so we called in Hospice of the Valley. He is now in their care and they are wonderful.

Dave is comfortable and at ease. We don’t have an expectation of imminent passing- he could be around for quite some time, or be gone tomorrow. Being mindful, we live in the moment and count each day as a blessing.

Communication is a challenge right now, with all visitors understandably banned, including close family.

We are having his home phone # transferred to Brookdale so it will be more convenient for friends to call, but we are told that won’t be effective until April 9. In the meantime close family is getting by with staff members sharing their devices for FaceTime or Skype.

His address is:
David Nelson
Room 4
Brookdale North Mesa
2122 E. Brown Road
Mesa, AZ 85213

Peace, Blaine Nelson

Weekly Update – March 18, 2020

Thunderbird West is self-suspending all gatherings (including Game Night and Meditation) until May 3, in response to the latest guidelines from the CDC and AZDHS. That doesn’t mean that we can’t worship together. There are many options and opportunities to gather together virtually through online experiences.

Consider the following ideas to invite or remain engaged in worship and spiritual formation at any time. Here are some online resources for worship, spiritual practices, and videos:

Lastly, but so very importantly, help to support the value of continued generosity by sharing the following link. It is a “How To” video for eTithing. It walks contributors through the steps of making contributions via eTithing: https://youtu.be/vOaogMcekbw.

We will continue to look for more ways to stay engaged in the Mission of Christ in this time of sickness and fear and keep you updated on the situation.

From Sara Tubbesing, AZMC president: “In this Lenten season and unprecedented time, our wilderness experience brings us opportunities to contemplate so much more than abstaining from a particular behavior. This year, we are challenged to live into a different community experience. While we are admonished NOT to risk sharing the virus, we are invited to risk new engagement and connection. Be brave, be creative, be comforted that we are all walking this journey together.”

Western Field Maundy Thursday Service
Join us for an evening of sharing and encounter as we reflect on the meaning of Holy Thursday. Ministry will be provided from across the Western Field as we reflect on the significance of the sacred meal shared then and now as we seek to embody Christ’s love in challenging times. In preparation please read Mark 14:17-25 and John chapters 13-17 often called Jesus’s farewell discourse.

Please see the Zoom information below. You can join either by computer or phone. Please reach out to your pastor or mission center president if you need help with how to join the online experience.

In Christ’s Peace,
Ron
